Adolescent Psychotherapy: FAQ

ADOLESCENT PSYCHOTHERAPY

I am experienced in working with young people up to the age of 25, who are at a challenging time in their lives leaving them vulnerable to distress and occasionally complex mental health difficulties.

A wide range of concerns bring adolescents to therapy; feelings of depression or anxiety, worries about their future, identity and relationship difficulties. Sometimes such feelings occur in the context of transition, for example starting at a new school or university but often the issues are more longstanding and need exploration.

The therapeutic process aims to help understand and resolve difficulties by increasing awareness of underlying feelings, and beliefs and how these influence relationships and self esteem.

By feeling understood and developing a thoughtful relationship with their therapist, the young person can gain relief and find healthier ways of managing their difficulties.

EATING DISORDERS

I have a specialism in working with adolescents who are suffering from or at risk of developing an eating disorder.

Work is developmentally informed, seeking to understand what might be underlying or driving the anorectic or bulimic symptoms.

This approach aims to promote self development, emotional expression and the toleration of emotional experiences in self and others. In my experience long term psychotherapy can provide a long lasting solution for such extremely serious mental health conditions and aims to prevent the eating disorder becoming a more established pattern of coping with unmanageable feelings.
